Colossians 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. In ancient bible times Kings often referred to themselves as the Image of God
They claimed to be God.
They told people what to do.
They ordered things to be made.
They defined good and evil.
Exodus 20:4 Do not make an idol for yourself, whether in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth
below or in the waters under the earth.
“People aren’t to make images of God because God has already made images of Himself” -The Bible Project
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. They will rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the livestock, all the earth, and the creatures that crawl on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; He created him in the image of God; He created them male and female. God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.” God also said, “Look, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the surface of the entire earth and every tree whose fruit contains seed. This food will be for you, for all the wildlife of the earth, for every bird of the sky, and for every creature that crawls on the earth—everything having the breath of life in it. I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.
Being made in the image of God includes the responsibility to rule and subdue.
We are to…
decide between good and evil
The LORD God took the man and placed him in the garden of Eden to work it and watch over it. And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree of the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die.”
Sin damages and distorts our ability to reflect the image of God
Colossians 1:16 For everything was created by Him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities— all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and by Him all things hold together. He is also the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning,
the firstborn from the dead, so that He might come to have first place in everything. For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile
everything to Himself by making peace through the blood of His cross — whether things on earth or things in heaven.
Jesus modeled what it looked like for a human to be the image of God.
He ruled by serving.
He lead by loving.
Jesus restored the image of God in us that was broken by sin.
Understanding our design shapes our identity and informs us of our purpose.
Who you are and what you do matters.
Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
